The aim of Reflexology Awareness Week 2017, which is organised annually by the Association of Reflexologists, is to increase public awareness around the globe of the impact of stress in the workplace and to promote reflexology as a non-intrusive therapy that can be hugely beneficial in reducing stress and the effect it has on an individual.
Work-related stress is one of the largest occupational health problems in the UK today and is a major cause of sickness leave. During the period 2014-2015, The Office for National Statistics recorded up to 27.3 million sick days, with a notable 35% being recorded as stress related illnesses. And, up to 70% of HR professionals believe that it’s a rising problem in their organisation.
Increases in stress levels can cause us to feel extremely unwell – with symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, and irritability, as well as an overall reduction in performance and productivity. It can also contribute to absenteeism in the workplace, which can mean a potential loss of income for the respective organisation.
Reflexology and Reducing Stress
Reflexology can be used as an effective way to reduce stress levels at work and is something that many employees and employers may not have considered. It’s an holistic therapy that helps ease stress and works by tackling the underlying cause of illness, rather than just simply treating the symptoms.
Reflexology treats the whole person and is based on the key principles that all of our organs, glands, muscles, bones and body systems are represented by reflexes that we have on our feet, lower legs, face, ears and our hands. And it works by applying pressure to our nerve reflexes using various massage techniques to improve our overall circulation and, in turn this allows the body to begin its very own healing process.
